The panorama of Brazilian inequality and the challenges of gender and race in education and the labour market
There were 544 direct beneficiaries, 346 girls and 198 boys. Of these 544, more than half of those reached by the Call is made up of black and mixed-race girls (56.7%). Overall, 420 participants were in lower secondary education, the initial focus of the Call’s projects. However, some projects have extended their reach to high school students and girls who have dropped out of the school system. The reach of the Call increases when indirect participants are included, covering an audience of 818 people, including students, teachers, researchers and scholarship holders. This expansion takes place mainly through activities that were carried out virtually and open to the population, making it possible for two more states to be affected by the GWGAB Call: Mato Grosso and Rio de Janeiro. Among the indirect participants, 70% are women, 29% men and 1% chose not to declare. When the focus is on race, among all participants, 56.6% identified themselves as black, 29.7% as mixed race and 11.4% as white.
Through questionnaires applied to a sample of 215 participants, it is possible to estimate that 91% of the participants think about their professional future and consider a career as something important, and 78% believe that education is a fundamental part of having better professional opportunities in the future. School advancement goes far beyond the individual effort of each student, it is linked to racial and socioeconomic issues. The questionnaire reveals that the participants are aware of the inequalities that plague the country: 59% believe that opportunities in the world of work are not equal for white and black people and 59% also disagree that there are equal opportunities between men and women. However, despite the existing social obstacles, 75% of students believe that they can follow any profession they want. This data reflects the young women’s greater confidence in themselves, something that was encouraged throughout the projects carried out.
